Our Mission
ScalyPal exists to make reptile and amphibian husbandry accessible, accurate, and actionable. The exotic pet industry is riddled with outdated advice, pet store myths, and AI-generated content farms that can literally kill your pet. We're here to fix that.
Every care guide on ScalyPal is built from three sources: peer-reviewed veterinary literature, consensus from experienced breeders with decades of collective knowledge, and direct keeper experience.
Our Story
ScalyPal was founded in 2024 by a small team of reptile keepers and software engineers who met through online herpetoculture communities. We shared a common frustration: every time a new keeper asked for help, they'd get pointed to a dozen different sources — some good, some dangerously outdated, and most incomplete.
The breaking point came when a friend's leopard gecko developed severe metabolic bone disease because a major pet store chain's care sheet still recommended calcium-free sand and no UVB. That gecko survived, but too many don't. We decided to build what the community desperately needed: a single source of truth that actually evolves with the science.
What started as a passion project with 5 species guides has grown into the web's most comprehensive reptile care resource — 99 evidence-backed articles covering 35+ species, 8 cross-species thematic guides, and 3 interactive tools, maintained by a team of dedicated keepers spread across the United States.
Why We Built This
If you've ever bought a reptile from a chain pet store, you've probably been handed a care sheet printed in 2005 — recommending sand for leopard geckos, 20-gallon tanks for bearded dragons, and red night bulbs that disrupt sleep cycles. These aren't minor errors. They cause chronic stress, metabolic bone disease, and premature death.
We've seen too many "beginner reptiles" suffer because of bad information. ScalyPal is our answer: a single, trustworthy source that evolves with the science.
How We Work
Research First
Every article begins with a deep dive into veterinary manuals, peer-reviewed papers, and consensus from the herpetoculture community. Our references aren't decorative — they're the foundation. We cite Mader's Reptile Medicine, the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, and husbandry standards from ARAV and AZA-accredited institutions.
Experience Validates Research
We test husbandry recommendations with our own animals and cross-reference with experienced breeders who have decades of collective knowledge. If the literature says one thing but 50 breeders say another, we dig deeper until we understand why — and we tell you both perspectives.
Continuous Updates
Husbandry science evolves. When the community shifts on UVB provision, substrate choices, supplementation schedules, or enclosure sizes, we update our guides. No article sits untouched for more than 90 days without review. Our monitoring system flags stale content automatically.
Tools, Not Just Text
We build interactive calculators and checkers — temperature & humidity reference, feeding schedule planner, calcium dosage guide — that you'll actually use during daily husbandry. Every tool is built from real husbandry data, not generic formulas.
Our Editorial Team
ScalyPal's content is created and reviewed by a distributed team of reptile keepers, veterinary technicians, and herpetology enthusiasts across the United States. Our core team brings together:
- 15+ years of combined reptile keeping experience across 40+ species
- Veterinary technician expertise — our health content is reviewed by a licensed vet tech with exotic animal specialization
- Breeder partnerships — we consult with specialized breeders for species-specific husbandry details that academic literature often misses
- Software engineering — our interactive tools are built by engineers who keep reptiles and understand what keepers actually need
We're not a faceless content farm. We're keepers who have spent countless hours researching the perfect setup, making mistakes, and learning from them — so you don't have to. Every team member maintains their own collection of animals, and we practice what we publish.
Our Values
🔬 Evidence Over Opinion
When research and anecdote conflict, we lead with the evidence — and explain the nuance so you can make informed decisions.
🐾 Animal Welfare First
Every recommendation prioritizes the animal's well-being. If a popular practice is harmful, we say so — even when it's uncomfortable.
🌍 Free & Accessible
ScalyPal is and always will be free. Good husbandry information shouldn't be locked behind a paywall.
🔄 Continuous Improvement
We track article performance and update content based on reader feedback, new research, and real-world outcomes.
Acknowledgments
ScalyPal wouldn't exist without the global herpetoculture community. We're deeply grateful to the breeders, veterinarians, researchers, and fellow keepers who have shared their knowledge in forums, at expos, in Facebook groups, and in YouTube comments. Every keeper who has ever posted a detailed enclosure build or a health question with follow-up — you've contributed to the collective knowledge that makes this site possible.
Special thanks to the teams behind ReptiFiles, Advancing Herpetological Husbandry, and The Bio Dude for pushing husbandry standards forward and inspiring us to do the same.
